"In Canada, Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day, held annually on the spring equinox, is a time to celebrate the diversity of Two-Spirit identities and raise awareness about the unique experiences of Two-Spirit people.

Conceived by First Nations Cree scholar and community organizer Harlan Pruden, and advocated for by members of the Two-Spirit community, Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day is an annual celebration of the radiance and diversity of Two-Spirit identities, expression and experience . Held in alignment with the spring equinox each year, the celebration is intended for all Two-Spirit and Indigenous queer and trans people, as well as allies, families, and friends.

ARTWORK: Artist Margaret August
Is a Two-Spirit, Coast Salish artist from shíshálh Nation. Margaret was born in 1983 in the traditional unceded Lkwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories, now referred to as Victoria B.C.

Two Spirit Rising is a mural Margaret created in Vancouver during the summer of 2020.

'This art piece depicts two Coast Salish Thunderbirds surrounding a human figure in the middle.

Thunderbirds are symbols of power, protection and strength. The supernatural powers of Thunderbird provide spiritual protection.

It is said that they can take human form when they lift their heads up as shown in the design. When Thunderbirds flap their wings, lightning strikes, accompanied by the sound of thunder.

The human in this design represents Two-Spirit people. Two-Spirit people bring special gifts to the world and offer the same protection a Thunderbird provides. They are non-binary. Therefore, they bring a balance to the world that would otherwise not be present. Their healing powers are needed on this earth.

The Thunderbirds in this design are protecting our sacred gendered people.'
